There are many things that can cause a tummy upset that can result in nausea, vomiting and mild dehydration in children. Here are some things you can do at home to help your child feel better as soon as possible.
Apply a warm water bottle or wash cloth
Placing a warm water bottle or wash cloth on your child’s abdomen during a stomach ache will help to relieve pain by relaxing the muscles and intestines. Leave it in place for 20 minutes at a time. A warm bath is another option for relief from pain and cramping.
Offer bland foods only
When a child has an upset tummy, it’s best to give them bland foods that are easier to digest if they are hungry. Good choices include bananas, rice and toast. Cut out any spicy or greasy foods for a couple of days after the upset has passed.
Let them rest
Get your child to lie down and rest for at least 20 minutes if they develop a stomach ache. A good position that will help to relieve some of the pain is to lying flat on their back with knees bent.
Make a cup of tea
A warm cup of lemon tea sweetened with honey will help relax a cramping tummy and help relieve pain. If your child will drink it, ginger tea is also a good choice.
